There’s a quote originally attributed to ocean explorer Jaques Cousteau: "people protect what they love." Sir David Attenborough expanded the idea when he said, “No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”
That’s why the public opening of a 375-acre nature preserve is so important. Alachua County purchased this property on December 15, 2009 and it took until 2021 for it finally to be ready for the citizens to experience. We know that when the do, they will love the property and they will join the county's stewardship staff in working to protect it.
It has already taken many people with good souls and strong backs to bring us to this point. Volunteers worked arm in arm with county staff to make it happen. There were tons of trash to remove, a bridge and visitor amenities to build, trails to clear, invasive species to treat, timber to harvest, and trees to plant. We can now invite everyone to experience and love Turkey Creek Preserve.
